My reflections on looking for the good.
That was the central premise behind my minister’s recent sermon.
He opened his sermon with the fact the human mind has thousands of thoughts a day. That instantly caught my attention. I often feel like my mind, much like my laptop, has multiple tabs open at a time, with competing demands on my attention. I’m sure you feel the same way.
With all the demands on our attention, the message from that Sunday’s sermon was to focus on the good. It’s easy to let our shortcomings dictate our thoughts, but if we change our perspective, and count our blessings, it will likely alter the way we see things.
I get the message. But, it’s hard!
I frequently find myself getting caught up in the harried state of keeping children alive and fed, making sure I’m meeting professional expectations, being a good friend, and an equal partner in my marriage.
I have to stop, take a pause, and urgently count my blessings.
Focus on the good
I am lucky to have healthy, active children. I am fortunate to have a job that is fulfilling and helps me support my family. I have friendships who sustain me, how amazing! I have a partner in life who pushes my thinking and encourages my efforts, what a blessing.
The thing is, I know there are seasons of stress and worry that make it harder to focus on the good. I’m thinking of friends who are experiencing job stress, caring for sick children, and mourning the loss of loved ones. It’s easy to count your blessings in times of plenty, but far harder to change your perspective in times of need.
So, what are your go to strategies for seeing the good? How do you pause, reset, and remind yourself of your blessings? Here are a few of my favorites:
Coffee chats with a confidant
Rest (I love to sleep!)
Going for a walk
Writing or journaling
What do you do to help you focus on the good?
