A Girl and Her Dog: The Special Connection Between Kids and Their Dogs

Sharing is caring!

S, our second born, is the epitome of responsibility. She is consistently helpful, and is a natural caretaker. This extends to our family dog, Bronx. Since the day we brought him home S has insisted on helping care for him. She gave him his first bath and laughed with delight as he wriggled his way out of the tub and resisted all efforts to dry him.

Special Connection

When Bronx went to training, S rode with me to drop him off, petting his head and repeatedly assuring him we loved him and would be back to visit. Even at his most excitable stage, Bronx listened to her; she is his person.

S brought home a picture she drew at school of what she wanted to be when she grew up. It’s a beautiful depiction of her walking Bronx. She proudly announced she wanted to be a dog trainer one day.

Having a pet is a great way to establish routines, encourage the kids to be partly responsible for his care, and to love an animal in that unique way. The two of them share a special bond. Bronx likes to find his way up to her room and I will hear her talking to him in such a kind, loving way. She knows his commands and confidently redirects his undesired behavior and then I hear her loving on him.

Bronx is unique and has a lot of anxiety. He does not like to be touched and is especially anxious at the vet. General check ups can be an event for us all! We learned a lot from our trainer about how to read Bronx’s cues and help alleviate some of his anxious behaviors. S has always been involved in our training sessions and comforting our best boy.

Jay and I have had dogs for years and they’re each special in their own ways. Bronx is our goofy, socially awkward, yet lovable German Shepherd and S loves him immensely [so do we]!
