Recently I wrote about my elation that Jay fixed my washing machine!
It seems to be ‘fix it’ season because between our two homes there have been an abundance of little fixes we’ve made. When we arrived at the beach last week we found the Diamond in good shape after another summer of family rentals. But of course, home maintenance is a year round thing, so we found a few items that needed to be addressed.
Most noticeably after a summer of sun, weeds were abundant in the driveway and around the pool. We knew this would be the case. On the way down, Jay said he would likely unpack the car, throw on a swimsuit, pick weeds, then jump in the pool to cool off. Can you tell we’ve done this before?!
So many weeds
S and I helped pull weeds in the back around the pool. It was so hot we decided to focus on the areas in the shade and we’d spray the others and then pull them later when the sun went down. Jay and I wondered if there was a natural remedy for weeds that avoided spraying the harsh chemicals since the dog (and we) spend a lot of time in the backyard.
After some research, we both clicked on the homemade recipe that called for vinegar, salt, and dish soap. I have to say we were dubious, but decided to give it a try and if nothing else, we could always revert to the weed killer sold in hardware stores if needed. We bought the necessary supplies at the grocery store and mixed the solution in our sprayer. We sprayed the driveway first to test it out and waited overnight.
This is probably not new to most of you, but y’all, it worked!
We were so excited! We used the rest of our homemade weed killer in the backyard. By the afternoon our weeds were dead and dried up. They were super easy to pull and toss in the yard bags. The only drawback we see is this solution doesn’t prevent future weeds from growing, but in terms of treating active weeds, it works!
What homemade solutions have you found for everyday household problems?
