One mom reflects on the lessons learned in the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl, the spectacle that is this annual sports event gave us lots of stories and fodder the past few weeks. The match up and game analytics. The stars who come out for the big game. The build up and anticipation of it all. And of course, tracking Taylor to make sure she made it to Vegas in time!

In general we’re a sports loving family. We are not huge NFL fans and don’t pledge allegiance to any team. We were just hoping for a good game.

With two tweens in the house, there’s been lots of talk about the Super Bowl and all the major star power that surrounds it. As a mom of tweens here are a few of my takeaways after watching the big game:

Sports are a Family Event

There has been a lot of attention the last couple of years on the brothers, Jason and Travis Kelce. And this year was no exception.

Regardless of how you feel about the cultural phenomena that is the Kelce brothers, you cannot deny one thing: how much they love and respect their mother.

I don’t have any first hand experience with either player. I listen to their podcast. I read headlines and catch blurbs from their interviews. One thing that I consistently admire is how much they credit their family, especially their mom, for the sacrifices made to support their dreams.

As a mom raising tweens, I appreciate her consistent presence in her boys’ lives, even as established professionals at the peak of their careers. And of course I love they openly and humbly thank their parents for the sacrifices they made to help them reach their goals.

PS Jason as a girl dad is kind of amazing too!

Don’t Forget Where You Came From

So many of the players referenced their families and their home towns during the pre-game interviews and press conferences. It was incredible to see the athletic family legacy Christian McCaffrey comes from.

Right before the game aired I watched the families they interviewed in the sphere. Their obvious emotion and depth of pride spoke volumes about their player. It was incredible to see the players’ reactions to seeing their families interviewed and to hear their appreciation. It was a great reminder, we all start somewhere and to be grateful for our roots.

Believe in Yourself

Perhaps the greatest lesson to take away from this Super Bowl was Brock Purdy’s story. How could you not cheer for him??? To be the last drafted, dubbed ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ to playing in the Super Bowl two years later is remarkable and well documented.

I watched him navigate the press and media attention in a quietly, humble way that spoke volumes about his maturity and confidence in who he is. He demonstrates a beautiful message of never giving up and believing in yourself. I’m excited to continue following his career and learning more about his future impact.

The Taylor Effect

Lots of attention was given to the increased number of girls interested in the Super Bowl this year. As a mom of a tween girl, the Taylor effect was felt in our house, too. Regardless of how you feel about it, it was pretty cool to have conversations with our tween girl about football and she was very much into the game. I found myself wrapped up in the excitement, too!

So, whether you find your young athletes playing in the big game one day or not, there were some great life lessons that came out of the Super Bowl.

As I drove the kids to school this morning I said, ‘The Super Bowl is over, you know what that means?’

And without missing a beat, they responded, ‘Baseball season!!!’

See you on the ballfield! 😎
