A couple of years ago S got chilly during church. I slipped off the cardigan I was wearing and wrapped it around her shoulders. She wrestled her arms into it and truthfully, I forgot about it as the service ended and she bounded down the sidewalk to the car.

A few weeks later I was in her closet and noticed my cardigan hanging neatly amongst her clothes. My cashmere cardigan. A cardigan I loaned her during church, but was not willing to permanently give up!

When I asked her about it, she said, ‘oh, I thought you gave it to me.’ We laughed about it and I returned the sweater to it’s proper home…in my closet!

Fast Forward

Now that we’re rapidly approaching her tween years, S is just a few inches shy of my height. She has long, lean legs most of us only dream of and if her feet are any indication, she’ll surpass my stature quicker than I imagined.

And she has taken to ‘shopping’ my closet when she’s in search of what to wear. What was once a joke we laughed off, has transitioned to her ‘borrowing’ everything from my favored jackets and vests to leggings and my tennis shoes. Frequently I hear her rustling around in my closet, putting together looks that are a blend of her clothes and mine.

Girl wearing boots, walking

S wearing my (or are they her?!) boots!

Recently a fellow baseball sister complimented her shoes at a tournament and with a hint of a grin, S slyly said, ‘Thanks. They’re my mom’s.’

As a little girl she would play dress up in my closet and stomp around in my too big high heels. Now she plays dress up in my closet and wears it out in public! Jay thinks this is wonderful because we’ll save money on clothes for her. Ha! We’ll see how that turns out!

At this point, I’m just grateful she let me borrow her Lululemon bag for the cruise this summer!

Time is a Thief

Perhaps I feign annoyance when I discover her sorting through my clothes, but it’s just a reminder how time is a thief. It seems like yesterday I was struggling with a newborn and a toddler and now my youngest is wearing my clothes, borrowing my shoes, and we’re sharing accessories!

It’s a bit of a full circle moment, because I distinctly remember rummaging through my mother’s closet, especially her shoes. I would line up several pairs, mostly her heels, and attempt to walk around her room. I’d stumble over and stand in front of the full length mirror and admire them, before carefully lining them up in her closet. So, I guess it’s in S’s DNA to shop her mom’s closet.

Fingers crossed I get all my clothes back, because I permanently borrowed a pair of earrings from my mom for my bridal portrait nearly two decades ago!

What is something that has snuck up on you and reminded you time is a thief?
