Summer Bucket List: Five Ways to Spend Time as a Family

Sharing is caring!

In this post I list five simple ways to spend time as a family this summer!

Back in the winter, I wrote about intentionally trying to simplify our schedules in my post Progress Over Perfection. With the final days of school in the weeks ahead, I’m thinking about simple things our family can do this summer. Here are five things we want to do to make the most of our time together!

Go for a bike ride

We have easily accessible trails around our house that are perfect for late afternoon bike rides in the summer. It’s a win-win because the four of us can do this one together!

Swim in a lake

Between the ocean and the pool we find lots of opportunities to swim. But swimming in a lake seems like a quintessential summer thing to do. We’re planning to spend time with friends over July 4th paddling around in a lake and watching fireworks from the boat.

Spoiler alert: we did it! 🙂

Play in the rain

Typically we’re watching the forecast to see if rain showers will interfere with game times or practices. But, when they were little, the kids loved to stomp around in puddles and splash in the driveway during afternoon rains. Here’s hoping we get an opportunity to let loose and get soaked in a summer shower.

Sleep in

This is my personal favorite! I love the ease of our summer schedules, particularly turning off the alarm clocks. No explanation here, simply looking forward to a few extra cuddles.

Camp in the backyard

The kids have recently shown some interest in camping, so I think we’ll do a trial run in the backyard. We’ll pull out the tent Jay and his friends used for camping years ago and see if the kids are ready for something more away from home.

One of the things we like best about summer is the more leisurely pace we can assume as school and most activities take a brief pause. I like the slower pace and find we have more time to cook meals together, play outside, and enjoy life’s simplicities.

What do you have in mind for this summer?
