Lake Life: A Holiday Weekend at Smith Mountain Lake

Sharing is caring!

When summer began, I posted our family’s summer bucket list and over the fourth of July holiday we checked another item off the list: swim in a lake.

We spent a few days with family friends at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. It’s a 90 minute drive north of where we live in North Carolina and it is beautiful. The land around the lake is mostly undeveloped, so as you cruise around in the boat there are views of the surrounding tree-covered mountains. It’s wonderfully bucolic and serene; a quiet reminder of the majestic land and creation around us.

It was 90 degrees the days we were there, so really if you weren’t in the water, it was HOT! As soon as we anchored into a cove, the kids jumped in, splashing in the refreshing water. Even us big kids hopped in and floated around to cool off!

It’s such a deviation from our norm. We love swimming in the ocean or in our pool, but we rarely get to experience swimming in a lake. I love that the kids added that to our family’s summer bucket list and it’s cool we had the opportunity to swim in a lake together.

Now that we are halfway through summer, we have a few more items to check off our list. What are you still hoping to experience this summer?
